"After years of stalled-out fad dieting and low self-esteem, I had reached the point where I knew the way I was living was unsustainable. I wanted to change; I wanted to be able to like who I saw in the mirror. I just didn't know how. I took stabs at healthy eating, mostly just cutting back or starving myself. I joined a gym and all I could do was an elliptical machine; everything else intimidated the hell out of me. I lost a few pounds, but I was quickly tiring of the effort. From the beginning, Ben and his training team espoused education and longevity over quick-fixes. I learned how the metabolic systems work. I learned the relative values of macronutrients. We structured my diet in a way that allowed me to make decisions that suited my lifestyle while I changed my bad habits. We built muscles (the first time I'd built any in my life) and we burned fat. It sucked. That was a year ago. Now I'm down 70 pounds. I've lost 12 inches in my waist. I can run 6 miles, kayak for two hours, bike to work.
But the more amazing changes to me are the simple ones: I can tie my shoes. I can get up off the ground without assistance. I'm not afraid of stairs. Changing your habits and your lifestyle on your own is not impossible, but it's pretty close. For me, working out or managing my diet by myself was like having an idiot for a trainer. It was the blind leading the blind. I don't have that problem anymore."
